Villa Widmann Borletti

Villa Widmann Borletti

Bagnoli di Sopra (PD)

Villa Widmann Borletti in Bagnoli di Sopra is composed of a group of buildings built in different times and with different styles. The main body dates back to the 16th century and is part of the original structure of the convent of Santo Spirito, which was restored and extended by the Widmanns, who also built the villa’s main body, completed in 1706. The internal garden and the theatre were built later, the latter was at the time a very important part of the villa and the entire town’s life. To date, this monumental complex is one of the most important in Veneto for its size and beauty. Besides the Villa, this complex also includes the “Brolo” – which is the Hortus conclusus of the preexisting Medieval monastery – the theatre, the cellars, the barns, the horse stables, the ice-house and the dovecote tower. The Italian-style garden is home to 41 statues made by Antonio Bonazza in the mid 1700s: the group in front of the villa depicts the 12 zodiac signs and Greek gods while other statues, set apart between high hornbeam hedges, monumentally depict the old characters of the commedia dell’arte. The “Brolo”, the monastery’s ancient vegetable patch and fruit orchard, measures 20 hectares and is fenced by a high Medieval wall; it has two little lakes inside and is a sort of “natural oasis”, an isolated and protected area that is very appealing for the avifauna: besides a colony of Grey Herons, rare species such as Eurasian Bitterns, Water Rails, Red-backed Shrikes, common kingfishers and diurnal and nocturnal birds of prey find refuge here.   Address: piazza Marconi 63, Bagnoli di Sopra (PD) Open to the public by reservation Info: www.ildominiodibagnoli.it
